LOWCOUNTRY LAND TRUST

Lowcountry Land Trust partners with landowners and community organizations to permanently protect and nurture the land throughout coastal South Carolina. Founded in 1986, Lowcountry Land Trust has worked for more than 35 years to protect irreplaceable landscapes that make South Carolina extraordinary.

The organization has grown from a small community effort that rallied to protect Alge Island on the Stono River to an institution that protects more than 150,000 acres of coastal land and water. Places like Angel Oak Preserve, Marshview Trail, and Magnolia Park and Community Garden are publicly accessible and protected forever by Lowcountry Land Trust. The conservation of both private and public land is foundational to the health of our coastal ecosystem and our identity as South Carolinians.

Our work is not just about protecting land and water. It is about the places we conserve for the people who love the Lowcountry and the generations that come after us. As the largest land trust in the state, Lowcountry Land Trust has permanently protected over 150,000 acres across 17 coastal counties.

As coastal South Carolina continues to be one of the fastest growing regions in the country, it is imperative that land is set aside to provide undeveloped, open space that preserves wildlife habitat, mitigates flooding, enhances water quality, buffers historic resources, and so on.

In 2023, Lowcountry Land Trust plans to add another 16,000 acres to its portfolio of conservation easements and fee simple holdings on private and public land. With 528 properties currently under Lowcountry Land Trust’s care, your support allows the organization to annually monitor some of the most pristine natural landscapes and wildlife habitats in South Carolina.
